Apple hurts Palm and itself in the process

This news came to fruition yesterday, but the crime happen only a week ago. When the Palm Pre was created, Palm engineered the syncing ability for people to download their itunes collection to their phone like the Iphone could. John Naughton had this update on how Apple responded:

So last week Apple released an update to iTunes that closed the loophole and effectively screwed Palm, whose share price immediately declined. How did Apple describe its tactic? Merely by saying that the upgrade "addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices", which upon translation reads "Yay dudes! You're stuffed."

Damn, that was a jerky move by Apple for several reasons. It also signaled my refusal to ever buy a Mac product ever again, thats right, my dream to have a Mac Whitebook is now appearing silly and the ipod in my pocket seems generic.

It is very easy to see I am no fanboy of PC since I wanted to own a certain apple product and own yet another one. But as a man who understands business, there is no reason for Apple to waste money on doing such a thing. It also causes backlash on them, also hurting their business on itunes.

There is essentially no wrong in Palm's Pre being able to sync itunes music within it, in fact Apple should be humbled that Palm respects their music software instead of people buying it elsewhere so they can sync their music. But by engineering a block so that a crucial feature of the Palm Pre doesn't work, Apple faces some SERIOUS consequences.

First of all, Palm might sue since that engineering cost them money. Palm isn't depriving Apple of any profit, in fact it encourages profit because now another crowd can get their music easy on itunes. But depriving Palm of a promised feature to its buyers and not being the cause of the loss entitles them to sue.

Second of all, Palm owners will likely not buy from itunes again. None of those buyers have an iphone or clearly want one, and considering that todays cellphones have taken the place of the MP3 player as their music storage device. People do like to combine uses within one device, the iphone clearly established this at its introduction at Macworld.

Thirdly, as a result of the second consequence, Apple loses buyers in the itunes market due to angry Palm Pre owners, and could also suffer backlash for this move. We know Apple is aggressive, but this move shows backhanded tactics are not beyond Apple, especially considering they allow people to convert their music to the Apple format. What will Palm Pre do without the itunes market guaranteeing them ability to take their music with them? Music Piracy will ensue among other things.

Finally, Apple's move demonstrates not only a software close out like all their creations imply but also implies a hardware closure. I simply didn't buy a Mac because my software I have wouldn't support on an Apple Product, and there is very few that do. But closing the itunes service to outside developers indicates a deprived and pressured market to pay premium to enjoy the services Apple insists are better. I smell an antitrust suit or Apple losing some of their audience.

I do enjoy my 3 year old 60GB ipod, but i'm not inclined to replace the battery once it kicks the bucket. Maybe i'll ebay it and get myself a Zune, because I don't like combining devices like others do.

Tech Review: Toki Tori (iPhone App)

If you enjoy working out puzzle with a game that has great graphics and cool sounds, this would be a game to look into. When I first saw this game I thought it was to be a little going to be a little childish and really easy, but I was bored so I got it. After a few levels, I was starting to get really entertained. There are all sorts of puzzles you need to work your way through. If there is a special object that you can use (such as putting down a bridge, introduced right after Level 1), it explains it to you before you start the game to make sure you use it right. It’s a very easy to navigate around the levels, from where ever you are, you just tap the location you want to go to and if you can get there with no obstacles blocking you, then it will go for you otherwise it will create a circle of X’s.

This game is really fun and easy to play, and after the first few levels I’m sure you will get almost addicted to it. I really enjoy it and play it a lot, maybe once a week. You can either buy the full version (Currently 80% off, selling at $0.99) or you can try the lite version in the App Store.

Game Raiting: 5/5

iphone to get gaming accessories

Controller perhaps?

Okay this is just getting sad, the iphone might have some good iphone games for it. But they will never match the console era, having said that they might threaten the handheld market. But it didn't seem that way with them being touch-only while the DS and the PSP sport buttons and D pad or analog sticks. Now apparently they might remedy this problem with a controller attachment, which would be cheezy.

I can imagine them selling a kit that includes a dock to hold the iphone still if they are stupid enough to make a wired or wireless controller for it. Or a controller that attaches to it, that's great, note the sarcasm. Seriously, the iphone was designed for the ease of carrying it possesses. A latch on controller would be damn hard, probably impossible to stick onto the iphone. I remember trying to carry my DS around with the guitar grip on it, big mistake. I dropped my DS and it was a pain to hold in my pocket, I'd imagine the same could happen to Apple's iphone.

And i'm not forgetting the itouch, but its the same story.

This hype over the iphone being a competitive gaming device has got to end, and I have one big reason how it's going to end. People will not pay the extra money for the extra space in the iphone, and so they will run out of room for games soon.

But man, gaming accessories for a touchscreen cellphone/musicplayer?! that's ridiculous.

Tech Review: iPhone/iPod Touch 3.0 OS

Personally, if I would have known what the new OS would be like first, I would have not spent the $10. It just has features that should have been there all along. The only new one I really like is the Spotlight search and shake to shuffle, other than those I don’t use anything else that came with the update. The following really made iPhone users mad, it was taken from the iPhone 3.0 software update page: MMS support from AT&T coming in late summer. MMS is not supported on first-generation iPhone. Sending video via MMS is not supported on iPhone 3G. MobileMe seems like something that I would use and find very useful, but I am not paying $100 a year for it. Cut the price in half and sure, I would totally get it.

Overall I do not think this was a good update, it just had everything that apple should have included in the past. I really wished Apple could have done a little bit better. Hopefully soon they will come out with something amazing that wasn’t expected to be in the iPhone/iPod touch in the beginning.

Have a different opinion or have something to add? Please comment.

Tech News: iPhone 3.0 update

The new iPhone update has everything that everybody wanted when the iPhone and iPod touch first came out. Since the iPhone first came out I have heard so many complaints about not able to send pictures in text messages. Well its finally here. There are tons of new features in the new OS that everybody has been waiting for. As always iPhone users will get it for free but iPod touch users (like myself) will have to pay $9.95.

With the new OS on its way, Apple has also released a new iPhone, the iPhone 3G S. Apple has made several new improvements such as: 2x faster, built-in video camera, Voice control, Compass, Spotlight Search, and MMS. The new iPhone 3G S is priced at $199 and the old iPhone 3G will be brought down to $99!

Some of the new OS features:
Cut, Copy & Paste
Landscape Keyboard
MMS
Spotlight Search
Voice Memos
Internet Tethering
Stereo Bluetooth
Sync Notes
Parental Controls
Shake to Shuffle
New Languages
MobileMe Find My iPhone and Remote Wipe
And much much more..

iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3.0 OS release date: June 17th, 2009

Id's Doom just got reawakened

What's that you say? well apparently Id likes the Apple market for downloadable games and has decided to release Doom on it next week. Titled as Doom Resurrection.

LINK

It's crazy how Apple has unconsciously moved into the gaming territory, some have even said Apple will be part of the gaming world someday. Fat Chance.

That's cool that people can play Doom on their Itouch or Iphone, but I have to say doing it touchscreen seems...boring. There's probably no skill aiming, its not like with a controller where you have to guide your aim. And home consoles can obviously outstrip the Apple products with better graphics and more content.

So this is good news but the Apples "capabilities" will always be limited, and Apple failed when they tried to enter the console wars back in the 80's.
