Question of the Day #60: 9/7/09

This question came to me after seeing some fanmade concepts for a ps4 and xbox 720

Question #60: When do you think the next "next gen consoles" come?

  1. well, there's usually a 6 year span between most console releases...

    NES 1985 --6 years--> SNES 1991
    Genesis 1989 --6 years--> Saturn 1995

    Granted, some more recent examples have withered down to 5 years or so, such as:

    N64 1996 --5 years--> Gamecube 2001
    Playstation 1995 --5 years--> PS2 2000

    and probobly the most significant example:
    Xbox 2001 --4 years--> Xbox360 2005

    However, I think the only reason the original Xbox was replaced so quickly is because it was Microsoft's first console, and they didn't know of any good ways to extend it's life cycle.

    Now, with the introduction of the NXE, Natal, and still seeing games that keep pushing the hardware of the 360, it seems like the 360 will live on for a while.

    However... the 360 was the first to come out this generation, and I'm guessing it kind of forced Sony and Nintendo to release early.

    so now we have to look at the lifespan of the other consoles. The ps3 seems to be going stronger than ever, and definitely hasn't reached it's full potential yet. The Wii, on the other hand... might have maxed itself out.

    Wii motionplus might extend the life of the Wii a bit, but I don't think it'll do much for long. I mean, take a look at the Balance Board... it helped make the Wii big again for a couple months. and while motionplus may seems a little better than the Balance Board, I don't see it extending the life of the Wii past just a year when it normally would of ended.

    This leads me to believe that Nintendo will be the next company to release their new console first, and force the rest of the companies to release their competing consoles.

    my prediction:
    Nintendo ________ - November 2011
    Microsoft Xbox ______ - October 2012
    Sony PS4 - November 2012

    and then it's the end of the world, YAAAAAY!
