Viral Marketing on Long Island

What were you doing at 5:58 this morning? We (TJ, Aaron, Randy, and I) were sitting at Jones Beach on Long Island waiting for the Bioshock 2 publicity stunt. Our trip began around 4:30 in the morning as we all convened at TJ’s house. As you will see on video later, the trip started with a moonlit half hour drive to the beach where we all discussed many things including Monster Hunter 3 on the PSP (oddly).

Our anticipation later resulted in a discussion of what was going to occur. We developed many theories, some insane: massive kidnapping, some logical: Big Daddy sighting, and some funny: biggest rick roll ever to occur. We were one of the first groups of people to arrive at the beach as we noticed when we were one of maybe five cars, and the only group on the beach was a bunch of beachgoers in bathing suits. After arriving at the event, in true geek fashion, we busted out the GPS and followed it to as close as we can to the point we were given (we couldn’t get to the point because it was in the ocean).

The event really didn’t show itself too well. While we were there, there weren’t too many people in just one place. Only after TJ and I decided to look around did we actually find where the event was taking place. As we walked west, we noticed a small group of people and a large amount of wine bottles buried in the sand. This was what we were told, through rumor, what happened in Australia.

The stunt turned into a 75-100 person meet and greet. There, gamers were talking face to face on what they thought about the next game, the event, and as you probably assumed other games. There was actually no real confirmation of anyone from 2K actually being there. Had we not tried to take more than one bottle a person, I do not know if we would have even been able to determine who was running the show.

They gave out wine? Of course not. The bottles that were in the sand were merely plastic, and contained three posters paying homage to a message in a bottle. On the bottles themselves, the label tried to use as much of a Bioshock influence as possible, containing terms like Arcadia, Worley Winery, and 1958.

We left at the perfect time, just as we were walking up the beach towards the cars; we noticed park police riding up to the group. Apparently, they weren’t informed by anybody that a large group of people would be there, because they were broken up for “drinking.” This shows the event was an attempt at true viral marketing.

Shortly after, we left and stopped by a local diner with Geeksquisite author Stephanie. There, we reflected on the trip noting how much we liked the bottles. The group that showed up was, in my opinion, massive for being held at this hour. Maybe I was being naïve, but I was expecting a little more. Despite, I was not disappointed because it is hard not to have fun when you are not alone…being in photos on other websites doesn’t hurt either

Bioshock at the Beach

Hey guys I just wanted to post this to let everyone know that early this morning in about 7 hours or so me and a few other authors are gonna be heading to Jones Beach. In order to see what this whole Bioshock 2 viral marketing thing is all about. We aren't sure what we will be seeing but we're going in prepared bringing a video camera and a few still cameras. From what I've been hearing around the web it seems like a good amount of gamers are gonna be going so it should be a cool outing.

I'm praying we get to play a demo but I kinda doubt that. Some free shwag could be cool? I've been hearing some rumors that since there are 10 locations all around the world that we will probably just be getting a piece of the puzzle to something and that all 10 together will give us something. Either way it should be fun and probably going to meet some of the guys from Kotaku and other New york based gaming sites.

A few things to expect on the site in the following days would be a video of our trip if I can get that to happen. Don't hold me to the video though. We will definitely have photos on the site and a wrap up of the event and what went down. Other then that I'm not sure because we don't know what will happen just yet. Anyway keep checking on the site this weekend because there should be some cool stuff for you.

Location Info:

Where: Jones Beach
When: 5:58 Am August 8th

If anyone is going wants to meet us or anything just look for TJ who you can recognize from the youtube videos. A bunch of us are Here too. So look out for us or just yell out Geeksquisite on the top your lungs whatever suits you.

Red Steel 2 and Dark Void Pushed to 2010

HOLY CRAP is this list getting long. For anyone who hasn't been following here is a list of the 2009 games that have been delayed to 2010 SO FAR.

Delayed games:

1. Heavy Rain
2. Bioshock 2
3. MAG
4. Bayonetta
5. Splinter Cell: Conviction
6. Red Steel
7. Dark Void

There were about 20 or so games that I REALLY wanted this fall. The list above accounts for 7 games off of the list. There have been delays before (i.e. GTA IV) but I've never seen anything like this. I don't really have a problem with it I just think these companies should start following the Blizzard policy. Don't tell us dates and then don't hit them, wait until you know you can hit it. I know some games would be delayed still but we are at 7 so far and I have a strong feeling a few haven't been delayed just yet.

Now for Red Steel 2 and Dark Void

Ubisoft delayed Red Steel 2 because well I don't really know. here is their direct quote:

"We are disappointed that we have to postpone the release of several major games but we consider that this choice is the best one in the long-term interests of Ubisoft. Lastly, we are having to adjust our full-year targets to take into account the fall in business over the first half. The excellent response to our games at E3, as well as the high buzz generated for titles such as Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell Conviction and Avatar, reinforce our belief that the company can achieve strong growth in the second half of the fiscal year."

Their delay doesn't really give a direct reason but as you can see they are rearranging a lot of their products.

Capcom delayed Dark Void for pretty good reasons. The main of which is to get the new IP out of the crowded fall lineup. Much like Heavy Rain the fall just isn't a good time for new IPs.

"Dark Void is moving into Capcom's fiscal Q4 in order to get the game out of the crowded fall game season and to allow the development team more time to polish and enhance the game experience."

Good to know with the extra time will come a few more months of polish. The game has been on my radar since E3 2008. So I've waited a long time for this one so I hope they use the extra time well.

Bioshock 2 Pushed to 2010

Well continuing the trend of delaying games Heavy Rain Pushed to 2010, Bioshock 2 will not be coming out in 2009. The game was scheduled to come out this November here in the States but due to development issues the game won't be coming out on time. Take-Two stated that the more time will be needed to develop the title to give the fans what they want.

I still can't say I'm all that excited about Bioshock 2 but I think a lot of people are so it's pretty disappointing. I personally don't mind seeing a few of these games pushed back. With money being the way it is there is no way to afford the 30 games I'm gonna wanna play this fall. So to see that some of them will be spread out a bit is a nice change. I loved when GTA IV and MSG4 came out in the spring.

Take-Two has also delayed Mafia II and Red Dead: Redemption to 2010 as well. I don't care about the Mafia series but Red Dead is a game I am interested in and will probably get the ps2 title Red Dead: Revolver to see what it's like.
