Ed's Trailers of the Month: December

My apologies for not posting, I have had some animosity towards certain contributors of this blog who are in no shortage of insults towards me. They know who they are, and will be grateful I am still posting.

Since I have animosity towards a certain member, I have decided to release my trailers of the month which has been gathering dust.

1. Inception

The actual trailer doesn’t reveal the plot as much as some hope it would, but it gives us a general idea of this as a Psychological Thriller. I personally look forward to this movie, if anything the movie is indeed a big budget indulgence of Christopher Nolan’s mind.

2. Iron Man 2

Must see! I look forward to seeing Don Cheadle as War Machine, but damn Mickey Rourke as Whiplash looks badass. The trailer has me excited, and man does it tease me with all the new elements for the second movie.

3. Shrek Forever After

Do I dare give Shrek another chance after how bad the third one was? The premise removes the stupid kids they had at the end, and starts over the relationship for all of them. This is the final movie; can they make up for the third movie?

4. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Nicolas Cage is hit and miss. This movie looks pretty damn fun and REALLY goes for imagination with the visual effects. The last part of this trailer is a testament to how good Nic Cage is when he’s crazy. I can’t help but think maybe they showed too many of the visual effects in the trailer, which would suck exponentially if this movie isn’t anything else but visual effects.

5. The Crazies

I really don’t go for horror thrillers anymore because they don’t really have the ability to scare you anymore, this one might. I almost thought this was a zombie film with the way the disease was affecting people, but it seems to be something “more”.

Hope at least one movie got your attention.

trailers of the Month: November 2009

ED's Pick's

Clash of the Titans Trailer

Looks promising, Leterrier showed us his abilities with The Incredible Hulk. A remake of this movie has MUCH to gain from advances in technology to make a classic like this all the more sweeter.

How To Train your Dragon Trailer

Dragons are awesome. I said the same thing when I was excited to see Eragon, but that ended up being terrible. However, I am a fan of Chris Sanders and what he has done in animation. To me he was one of the biggest losses for Disney, and the only time I’ve ever been mad at John Lasseter.

Grown ups Trailer

Dennis Dugan has made some real crappy movies for Happy Madison, named after its two best movies. However, I laughed quite a bit from this trailer and perhaps this movie will put Happy Madison comedies back on the map.

Beastly Trailer

I read the book and personally know the author. The teaser for this is much darker than the book’s tone, which is a good thing. As one of her first fans, it’s cool to see one of Alex Flinn’s stories being made into a movie.

Extraordinary Measures Trailer

Based on a true story, John Crowley takes a gamble to save the lives of his kids. To do this he sacrifices to fund the theoretical breakthrough of Harrison Ford’s eccentric character. Good premise, True Story, is it done well? We’ll see.

TJ's Picks

kick-ass Trailer

I'll save you the play on words of Kick-Ass is Kick-Ass by just saying this trailer is fucking epic. With the over saturation of superhero flicks over about the last 10 years or so I think we are finally seeing the end. This film pretty marks the "Shaun of the Dead" of the genre. Then again zombie movies still get made but post Shaun movies have had a very different vibe. So maybe superhero films with get that same sort of vibe. We'll see but either way I think we are in for a Kick-Assing good time. Sorry I couldn't help myself.

how to train your dragon Trailer

I saw this in 3D when I saw Jim Carrey's Christmas Carol and it just looked like a ton of fun. Dreamworks has really stepped up. There were a few crappy years but after Kung Fu Panda the films seem to be getting better and better. I can't wait to see this, maybe even more then Toy Story 3? Shhh don't tell anyone, it will be our little secret.

clash of the titans Trailer

It's not a great trailer by any means. The song doesn't fit the tone and the clips are terribly edited together. But there's giant scorpions, greek gods, and an up and coming action start Sam Worthington. I'm very interested and will have a better opinion when a full trailer is released.

salt Trailer

Cross Wanted and Mr. and Mrs. Smith and what do you get? Salt, at least thats what they are trying to make it seem like from the trailer. I didn't love either of those films although I do enjoy watching Wanted. But I really liked Angelina Jolie in both films. This will be one of the more interesting films to watch jsut because as far as I know it's a original new franchise which is rare this day. Although what do I know I could jsut go look on google and find out it's a book or a graphic novel buy then I'd be actually trying and no one needs that.

prince of persia: the sands of time Trailer

Bad trailer, Bad accent, Bad Acting, a white guy playing a persian, Ben Kinsley, Jerry Bruckhiemer, Video game adaptation, convoluted story, alright I think you get the point. There shouldn't be any reason to have this on my list. But I like dumb action movies and everything above leads to the conclusion that this will be a dumb action movie.

Note: I didn't watch Extraordinary Measures until after this post was written but it's dam good and would have made number 3 on my list if I saw it before this post.

Trailers of the Month: October 2009

Ed's Picks:

Toy Story 3 Trailer #2

Do I really have to explain this? Fine, it’s probably Tim Allen’s only good role where he’s used effectively, and the Spanish reset thing concerning Buzz looks hilarious. Plus it’s Toy Story, a great set of movies made by Pixar who can do no wrong with how hard they try.

Avatar Trailer #2

I understand James Cameron has never made a bad movie yet, but I refuse to hype a movie BEFORE I see a real trailer that tells me everything. Then the international trailer came out, and it was really good. Put this movie on your list of must see films.

Edge of Darkness Trailer

Mel Gibson in a leading role again? Interesting, although this movie sounds like it’s been done before. However it is a compelling looking movie, I won’t lie. Mel Gibson definitely helps build a strong movie.

The Maiden Heist Trailer

This looked like a simple comedy you could laugh and forget about, but having Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken and William H Macy as the guards looks hilarious. This could be one of those movies with only a few good jokes but great performances can make up for that immensely. I did laugh a few times while watching the trailer.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans Trailer

Nicholas Cage does everything he gets, and for some reason that makes me a fan of him for trying to be flexible. The way he performs in the trailer has me tempted to see this movie. But jeez, Xzibit’s in this movie? That kind of says how serious they were with the casting, especially with someone who shouldn’t be acting.

TJ's Picks

Avatar Trailer #2

Other then The Hobbit this has been my most anticipated movie for over two years. I have been patiently waiting for some footage for a long time. I saw the first trailer and it was bleh and then I saw the Avatar Day footage which was incredible but didn't give a mountain of information regarding the main plot of story. Well here for the first time we get a 3 minute story trailer for Avatar and it is nothing short of incredible. Watch it enjoy it and if you don't see it I might just have to write you and angry e-mail.

Me and Orson Welles Trailer

I'm a film major of course I'm interested in a movie with and partially about Orson Welles. He might have lost his luster as he aged but while in his prime Orson Welles was one of the biggest personalities and egos on the planet. He's a fascinating person to study and delivered one of the greatest films of all-time Citizen Kane. I think Zac Efron has a lot more talent then his High School Musical career so far has given him. This is his chance to show us what he's got, good luck Zac.

Toy Story 3 Trailer

Not sure what to say other then it's more of the greatness that is the Tory Story franchise. I have to admit after 15 years since the first film came out I have had my fill of this franchise and wish we were getting something new from Pixar instead but I'm sure it will be great regardless. Where's my A Bug's Life sequel thats what I wanna know.

The Crazies Trailer

Zombies are the new vampires and the vampires are the new pussies. While the film indicates the zombies in this film to be a bit more of a supernatural background then a infection one it still seems interesting to me. Almost like a cross between The happening, Body Snatchers, and Stephan King minus the Shyamalan. Plus any trailer that uses Madworld has got my vote.

Invictus Trailer

The casting of Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela is about as obvious a casting choice as there can be. I'm a little concerned with his accent since in some scenes he has it and in some it seems to be missing. I'm still excited though and Matt Damon seems to be putting on a potentially oscar worthy performance. This is a film to watch.

Trailers of the Month: September 2009

Hey everyone sorry were a few days late with these. Hope you enjoy.

ED's Picks:

From Paris with Love Trailer

Okay, this director who made Taken kept me entertained but also has a very fast paced movie direction. Having said that I liked Taken, and the idea of John Travolta being a cold, calculating no questions to ask partner to Meyer’s character made me consider this movie.

Trick or Treat Trailer

There has been very few good horror movies in recent years, mainly due to desensitization and lack of originality. Having said that, Trick or Treat has an interesting interweaving of four stories and I especially was curious to what was happening to the people and the “rules” you can’t break on Halloween. Could be fun.

A Christmas Carol Trailer

Why should I care about a story I’ve seen and heard so many times…
Jim Carrey as Scrooge
Zemeckis’s motion capture technology
I’m a Disney Fan
The trailer looked fun

A Nightmare on Elm Street Trailer

Hate remakes, but production values changed for Platinum Dunes regarding this movie. Jackie Early Haley seems like a good Freddy, I’ll have to see what rotten tomatoes rates this thing upon release though.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox Trailer

I think George Clooney should be in more roles period, I don’t see him enough. This looks like a great chance for him to perform, Owen Wilson’s character towards the end was pretty funny. And there is something about this movie’s animation style that is so appealing to me and so suited for this comedic take.

TJ's Picks:

A Nightmare on Elm Street Trailer

The biggest problem I've had with all these remakes is the actual photography. I don't like the look of Nispel's films. The cinematography just feels to clean and smooth for what I think a horror film should look like. That seems to continue from what I see in the trailer. Other then that though, I'm pretty excited mostly to see more of Jackie Earle Haley who is quickly becoming one of my favorite character actors.

Solomon Kane Trailer

I didn't even know about this movie before the trailer but I'm really excited. It looks like a ton of fun and a bit darker then your typical action movie. Adult themed fantasy films not geared towards children is pretty rare, so this should be fun.

Michael Jackson's This is It Trailer

Not sure how many people know this about me but i'm a HUGE Michael Jackson fan so it's impossible for me to not be looking forward to this film. Think of him what you will there's no doubt the late icon made one hell of a mark on music history.

Defendor Trailer

I'm a huge Woody Harrelson fan and can't wait to see this superhero comedy. It has this great quirk about it that I just can't wait to catch in theaters. I hope the movie lives up to the great trailer.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox Trailer

Aright so how awesome does this movie look? FUCKING AWESOME, thats it. This seems like just crazy enough it might just work ideas. I can't say I'm really a bit Wes Anderson film but I'm excited.

Trailers of the Month: August 2009

Ed's Picks

The imagination of Doctor Parnassus Trailer

Yes it has Heath Ledger, but I dismissed the movie because I knew it would capitalize on his death like The Dark Knight did. I also knew they would have to fill his screen time in with one of several actors named, I actually had no idea they would use them all. So now this movie seems interesting to me, it’s a great concept of changing the character with different actors at a time. Plus it looks fun.

Law Abiding Citizen Trailer

Recommended by Movie Blog owner John Campea, I was surprised. This looks extremely good, and its actually exciting me to see a movie based on the idea of a single man bringing down the entire US system, and yet I support the guy because of the filler in the beginning about his family. Sign me up.

The Wolfman Trailer

I agree with everyone else, it’s a remake that stays true to the themes of the original including the period and using the technology of today to make it even better.

Legion Trailer

In the first 30 seconds I see a sweet little old lady, in the next minute I see a sweet little old blood smeared lady climbing the walls and a movie dealing with God and Angels. Sounds like an interesting premise with action, cool.

Astroboy Trailer

Yes you’re probably going WTF. But really, watch the trailer and tell me you didn’t smile once. I love the cast, I love IMAGI Animation, I love Animation in general, and this looks like plain fun with some heart.

TJ's Picks

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Trailer

It's been an awfully long time since I throughly enjoyed a Terry Gilliam movie. He's one of my absolute favorite directors to watch work. For the first time in what feels like forever he seems to be going back to his roots. The films that made him a legend, from Holy Grail, to Brazil, To The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Of course I'm interested to see Heath ledger's last performance but it's a serious back seat to me simply wanting to get my fill of the great Terry Gilliam.

The Lovely Bones Trailer

I feel like we've been waiting forever for this film to come out. Now that we have our first look I couldn't be anymore excited. The movie is based on a book about a girl that is murdered and is inbetween worlds trying to help her family deal with the grief of loosing her while helping to solve the case of her murder. Peter Jackson is one of those guys that is on my very short list of directors that hasn't made a bad film. I enjoy King King, yes!

The Wolfman Trailer

I'm so disappointed that the film isn't coming out this October. It's coming February 12th 2010 I believe. But if it means they are making it better then I'm all for it. Benicio Del Toro looks like it might be the most inspired casting of the last decade. While I'm not a huge fan of the directore (Jurassic Park III) it really looks like from the trailer that they got the tone right and thats huge.

Law Abiding Citizen Trailer

I didn't even know about this Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx movie until I saw this trailer a week ago. Usually that isn't a good sign if I don't even know what your movie is. It comes out in a few weeks and looks rather interesting. I'm typically not into thrillers but this one has got me excited. Sadly it looks like one of those thrillers where the ending will probably be a let down but still worth taking a look at.

Legion Trailer

Paul Bettany is one of my favorite character actors and almost always gives his best. Even when he's not in the best movies he's always fantastic. Then there's Dennis Quaid who is a bit more hit or miss but usually solid. Oh and did I forget to add there is a battle between Heaven and Earth. Angels warring against the planet trying to kill the child of a small town girl being protected by Paul Bettany a fallen angel. This should be a ton of fun at the movies.

And there you have it our trailers of the month. Hope you watched and enjoyed.

Trailers of the Month: July 2009

ED's Picks

Toy Story 1 and 2 3D Trailer
What a cool idea it is to release these fantastic movies together, I can’t say more than that about the movie. But jeez, over 3 hours with 3D glasses sounds disorienting. Well, you can’t beat the value of two great Pixar movies for one ticket price.

Despicable Me Trailer
When I saw this was CGI I thought to myself, non Pixar equals fail. But the trailer was actually very entertaining, especially with the trampoline effect on the “fake” pyramids. Throw in Steve Carell as a bad guy for this comedy and I was smiling at the idea of this movie. Maybe I’ll see it.

Carriers Trailer
This one I picked purely because I like to see how far humanity will go to ensure its survival and I am curious to what this virus is. Sounds like another 28 days later, which is in essence a zombie movie, if that’s the case sign this zombie movie fan up. Horror movies haven’t really worked lately, so this one is up in the air for me.

Alice In Wonderland Trailer
I am not a Tim Burton fan, I love Beetlejuice and Batman is okay but beyond that I don’t care for much of his work. And yet, this movie looks wonderful. Johnny Depp is fun to watch, and the way the rabbit acted made me look forward to his scenes.

The Book of Eli Trailer
I grew to love Denzel Washington as an actor, but movies such as Déjà vu haven’t helped that. Book of Eli looks like a great role for him, having Gary Oldman supporting doesn’t hurt either. I’m also curious what the story will be like.

TJ's Picks

The Fantastic Mr. Fox Trailer

I honestly don't know much about this movie. It's based on a Roald Dahl children's story but thats the extent of my knowledge. The biggest draw for me is the animation style. Some might think it would be Wes Anderson but I have to admit I have never really cared for his movies. The style here is really easy on the eyes and it really refreshing.

Hot Tub Time Machine Trailer

Craig Robinson and John Cusack in the same movie, need I say more? And There is a HOT TUB TIME MACHINE!!!

Alice in Wonderland Trailer

I do believe Tim Burton is overrated BUT not by that much. I mean the man is NO James Cameron but he is still has some dam good movies. Alice is a perfect world for Tim to work in. Also the Cheshire cat looks AMAZING.

World's Greatest Dad Trailer

I miss the days of Robin Williams being funny. I also love it when he gets deep dramatic roles. This movie looks like it might have the best of both Robins. So i'm really excited to see how this one unfolds.

The Book of Eli Trailer

The story so far isn't interesting at all to be honest. But I like Denzel and I like kick-ass action and this movie looks like it will have both. It's been a fairly weak month for trailers so I'll let this one get on the list.

Trailers of the Month: May 2009

Ed's Picks:

Sherlock Holmes Trailer

This is a no brainer for May, it’s part of the growing respect for Robert Downey’s performances, and it’s Sherlock Holmes. But this is no regular biopic, heck it even goes under 6 genres including Thriller, Drama, and even has some crazy looking action. I have to see this.

The Princess and the Frog Trailer

Disney’s formal return to the 2D animation that created the Renaissance in the 90’s with box office after box office. This one makes me laugh and is an interesting reverse take on what happened after the princess kissed the frog. I want to see this, but when there are less noisy kids around.

District 9 Trailer

Directed by Neil Blomkamp, fairly new in the business. This movie goes into the issue of humans meeting aliens and apparently messing up communication in them. A piece showing how we as humans need to change our behaviors in times of peril or meeting other species, sounds fun to me. I will definitely see this.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra Trailer

As ridiculous as it sounds in this day and age a G.I Joe movie is coming, and the trailer has some cool moments thanks to the wonders of CGI. The slew of cast members makes me question whether this will stick with people, but the moments with the armor was the nail in the coffin to make me see this. I will see this and hope it doesn’t suck.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Trailer

A new Trailer came out in May, It showed some more footage. But the biggest one was at the end, the robot sucking sand which is likely Devastator. Another reason for me to see this movie, ILM made a kick ass looking devastator. I’d have to have broken legs to miss this movie.

Runner up

Gamer Trailer

The makers of Crank bring us a futuristic look at death row inmates being used as MMO characters for real life stunts. If they survive they go free, as much as this defies logic as Brain Taylor and Mark Neveldine did with Crank. That movie delivered so this definitely should be fun. I’m still mulling over seeing this

TJ's Picks

The Road Trailer

The Road is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Cormac McCarthy. I haven't personally read the book but the trailer that was just released is just absolutely phenomenal. It has a great atmosphere to it and from all i've been hearing if you see one movie this year it's the one to see.

Sherlock Holmes Trailer

As Ed stated above this isn't just any ordinary biopic. I really don't know what to expect. The cast is looking brilliant with Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and one of my favorite character actors Mark Strong. The trailer is fast and hard and looks to be a fun time at the movies.

Surrogates Trailer

Based on a graphic novel the film starring Bruce Willis looks like a great robot mystery film. I,Robot tried to tackle the same sort of ideas but never really pulled it off. The trailer for this though looks very appealing just from a stylistic view point. I hope to read the graphic novel before the film hits theaters.

District 9 Trailer

A alien movie put into the style of a documentary? Sounds odd at first but if you have watched Neil Bloomkemp's short film on the same topic you can see it's possible. Plus who doesn't want to see what the would be Halo director can do with a feature film.

Blood: the last vampire Trailer

Alright I have seen the anime of this, I believe there is a manga as well but I haven't read it. I never really loved the anime but it was very much made for it's medium. Seeing a live action version seems like a odd fit to me but the trailer looks very good and like a ton of fun.

Runner Up:

Taking Woodstock Trailer

The trailer looks pretty good. It also helps that Ang Lee's name pops up. My biggest concern is in the trailer is that Demitri Martin is the lead. I have faith in Ang Lee's direction but Im still worried about Martin. It's the reason why Im not confident enough to put it on my top trailers.
