Geeksquisite Question of the Day #12: 7/21/09

This question came to me when thinking about the G phoria awards that I posted about earlier. A lot of entertainment has it's awards shows. The video games have been experimenting but I'm not sure if they've really been working.

Question #12: What do you think it will take for a video games awards show to get the mainstream success and respect like other awards shows in the entertainment business?

  1. The only way it will ever get the amount of respect it deserves is when video games themselves get the same amount of respect.

  2. I guess it is sort of like how film came to be. For anyone who doesn't know Film wasn't exactly respected and loved by people for quite a while. The Academy Awards started in 1929. Film started in 1878 and from then until 1895 would be like the equivalent of Pong and the Magnavox Odyssey. The silent film era like Atari to the Nes. and the Transition from black and white to color like the SNES and Genesis going into the N64. It took a good 40-50 years for film to really be loved and appreciated as a medium outside of a niche. Video games seem like their on a similar path to me. If my assumptions are correct I assume it will be another 10-20 years. Heres hoping it gets here a bit faster then that.
